Street Hype // Camden Town
The funky Vibe of Camden Town
Looking for vintage clothes or a new gothic or burlesque look? Wanna dress like a real rockabilly princess or a sci-fi alien-inspired florescent clubber? If you’re a member of one of the tribes looking for less manicured shopping streets than Oxford Street, Camden Town probably is the spot for you. Lined with millions of outrageous fashion stores and souvenir shops, tattoo studios, pubs, markets and food stalls, Camden High Street and Chalk Farm Road seem to attract even more millions of visitors every weekend, making it somewhat difficult to experience an easygoing shopping spree. You’re constantly at risk to lose balance due to overstimulation in NW1. But look out, not all that glitters is gold and not all that’s being offered in Camden Town is of superior quality. So it wasn’t definitely the chase for a glowing tummy tee that attracted us to visit the mother of London’s alternative neighbourhoods. Camden’s irresistable funky vibe is primarily generated by the absorbing mixture of people that live here or visit the area for whatever purpose. If you like to meet some of them, all you have to do is stay tuned and follow This Is Hype the next days…
Hype Profile // Cologne Carsten
Carsten at Maison Martin Margiela for H&M Launch, Cologne Neumarkt
Where are you from?
I’m from Saarbrücken near the French border.
What’s your mission in Cologne?
I’m a department manager for Zara. I will work at a Zara store in the centre of Cologne for the next three months.
What are you wearing today?
My complete gear is Zara, well, except my bag, which is Gucci.
What have you managed to grab from Maison Martin Margiela for H&M?
I bought two pairs of Margiela high top sneakers, one pair in red, another pair in white.
Do you like other pieces from the Margiela for H&M collection?
Yeah sure, some pieces of the men’s collection look really cool and they’re fine quality. But principally, Margiela’s avant-garde minimalism isn’t quite the style I’d go for.
So, what’s your personal style then?
I prefer a more tradional style. At the moment, I appreciate British Heritage that I combine with something flashy like the red denims I’m wearing today.

Street Hype // Cologne Elena
Elena on Ehrenstraße: Dancer in Himi Jendrix Psychedelia Sweater
Elena from Ukraine is a dancer, who regularly performs in some of the hippest clubs on Mediterranean island Ibiza, such as Pacha and Space. Elena’s outrageous sweater displays a colourful 70’s psychedelia motif, which plays with the initials of late guitar superhero Jimi Hendrix. “I don’t know what brand the sweater actually is, I knicked it from the wardrobe of my husband.” We wouldn’t dare to call it husband chic, but it’s definitely authentic boyfriend style. Are we wrong, if we assert that beautiful Elena bears slight resemblance to eclectic Icelandic wunderkind Björk?!

Hype Profile // Cologne Melanie & Mayla
Melanie and Dog Mayla on Brüsseler Platz: “All I need to rise, is look into your Eyes.”
Occupation:
I’m a marketing and PR manager, Mayla is my assistant.
What are you wearing today?
My coat is Tigerhill, this is the brand I work for. My denims are H&M. I’m wearing a pair of Dr. Martens boots that I bought at Dr. Martens Stockist in Berlin.
Why does Mayla have two-coloured eyes?
Mayla is a street dog from Greece and probably a mixture of everything. It’s believed that she is a mixed-breed of Kangal and Australian Shepherd. Australian Shepherds are well known for having brown or blue eyes or a combination of two different eye colours such as half brown and half blue.
How did you and Mayla get together?
I got her in early August and she may be have been five months old at that time (photos taken early September). However, Mayla’s age can only be guessed. She’s already quite big now and likely to grow even bigger. When I discovered her on Facebook, I learned that she was thrown over a fence in Greece as a puppy. I fell in love with her right away and then had her flown in. I named her Mayla because it’s the title of a song by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, one of my favourite bands. The chorus goes like “All I need to rise, is to look into your eyes.”
