Hype Song of the Month // Tegan and Sara Faint Of Heart
After going synth-pop-tastic on 2013’s Heartthrob, Canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara teamed up one more time with super-producer Greg Kurstin for their follow up Love You to Death. Their new single release Faint of Heart is a well-crafted pop song with a seductive hook and a catchy chorus. However, while Faint of Heart may not a be classic, the song carries more weight than a typical singalong. The Devon Kirkpatrick-directed clip accompanying Faint of Heart stars LGBTQ youth in-character as musicians traditionally cherished as community icons such as Prince, David Bowie, Madonna and Grace Jones. The real Tegan and Sara sit in the audience, cheering on the young performers who are comprised in an ultimate lip sync battle.
It’s noteworthy that Faint of Heart happened to be filmed the day after a gunman killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In that atmosphere, the creation of a video for a song with a strong message for the rights to act out queer love felt particularly emotional. Hence the first 15 seconds of the clip are intentionally silent.
