Hypest Song of the Month // Prince & 3rdeyegirl PlectrumElectrum
While one superstar leaves, another returns: After Madonna terminated contracts with Warner Bros. some time ago, the Prince formerly known as Artist surprisingly reunited with the record company that he claimed had done him so wrong that he was enforced to scribble the word slave on his cheek in 1996. Well, Prince has always been infamous for curious twists, this one bringing him back total control over his mighty back catalogue from the 1980s, for a start. For another, Prince made Warner break their sacred release rules, namely one album in two years, flooding the market with two records at the same time. Nothing wrong for Prince’s loyal followers here: PlectrumElectrum offers numerous sonic rock jams co-credited to Prince’s new versatile all-girl backing band 3rdeyegirl, while Art Official Age surprises by transcending genres, age, artistic boundaries, seducing R&B ballads into His Purpleness’ concept of a wacky sci-fi allegroy. Prince devotees will definitely not only cherish the classic funk and pop mastery on Art Official Age, but any chance to enjoy him doing his cool guitar chops, riffs and solos, all of whose PlectrumElectrum has aplenty. Just above, the album’s essential title track PlectrumElectrum is captured by young Minneapolis-based photographer Madison Dubé, displaying Prince and 3rdeyegirl rocking out at Prince’s Paisley Park Studios. Any trouble for an average consumer of contemporary music? As always, the Purple One demands a lot from his audience, while still refusing to come up with a smash hit to please a mainstream public. These two albums prove that Prince’s weird genius remains in good condition, and baffling as ever.
